There are countless things in the world that are more important than soccer. Just here in the US, New York became the largest state to allow Same-Sex Marriages last night. This kind of news is good and important, but somehow, sports manages to captivate millions and snatch the headlines. Tonight the US will play Mexico in the Finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Mexico has been the most focused team, but the US has managed to make it to the finals. Tonight, I’ll feel like a soccer bigamist since I support both teams. I grew up in the United States, but have my family roots in Mexico. Why, then, do I feel guilty for following both teams?
Ultimately, I want the US men’s national team to win, but I think it will mean more to Mexico and their legions of fans if El Tri comes out on top. They’ve got the stronger offensive weapons–including the tournament darling, and hottest striker in the world, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez–and an arguably tougher mid-field, but the US men’s national team has Tim Howard at goalkeeper, and tends to play well when they’re angry underdogs. I think they’ll play that roll tonight. Even though this game will be technically played in the US, the Rose Bowl stadium will feel more like the Mexican National Team’s home at Estadio Azteca in Mexico. This, probably, will motivate Howard, Dempsey, Bocanegra and the other players wearing the US jerseys. We’ll see. Whatever happens it will be a spectacle. I’ll have a few new canas (white hairs), and I’ll be happy and sad.

I’m so proud of New York!
It’s great news @rachel. I only wish it had happened sooner.
